Women’s March – January 20, 2018
Wow! A group of 76 Sun City Democrats traveled by bus on Saturday, to join women protesters in 10 cities in Texas and thousands of protesters in cities all over the United States. The one-year anniversary of Donald Trump’s inauguration was the date chosen to protest infringement upon women’s right to choose, while defending voter registration, persecuting health clinics such as Planned Parenthood, and ignoring the need for sex education in schools. Texas ranks dead last in the percentage of women receiving first-trimester prenatal care.
Marchers walked from Austin City Hall to the Capitol grounds where they heard various speakers: Texas State Representative Donna Howard, Melissa Fiero chairperson of the Women’s March of 2017, and former Texas State Senator Wendy Davis, among others.
Austin police estimated that up to 50,000 people attended the women’s march in January, 2017, while over 1 million people worldwide joined in marches in many countries. Many thousands of marchers were expected for the 2018 marches that occurred on both Friday night and Saturday.
Buses were organized for this trip by Activist Chairperson Pat Perkison and her husband, Bill.
